KWAZULU-NATAL – On Wednesday, 21 April 2021 a 58-year-old suspect who is a former employee of the Department of Transport was charged for fraud by the Hawks members from Pietermaritzburg Serious Commercial Crime.
It is alleged that the suspect had altered the department’s documents in respect of receiving guardrails and accessories at the logistic section. He allegedly created and manipulated records to account for the issuing of the guardrails as well as accessories that were not received by the department. The department conducted an audit of their records and it was discovered that the suspect manipulated records between June 2014 and August 2015.
The department suffered a financial loss of R3.9 million and a case of fraud was reported at Mountain Rise police station. As a result the case docket was allocated to the Hawks for further investigation. He will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on 18 May 2021.
The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Leseja Senona commended the investigating team for investigating this matter thoroughly.
