Pretoria : 4 March 2016 – The ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service aimed at ensuring that the OR Tambo International Airport is not being used as a transit channel for drug smuggling continues to pay off, the latest being the arrest of a 45 year old Norwegian national for possession of Khat.
The suspect was arrested last night by the Trans International Investigation Team and crime prevention teams of the SAPS during a routine search. The suspect, like the two others before him, was about board a Zurich-bound flight when he was found in possession of 24 kilogrammes of Khat worth almost fifty thousand rand. He has been charged for dealing in drugs and is due to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Early this week another Norwegian lady was arrested by the police as she was about to depart these shores. Najmo Abokar Ibrahim was arrested by the K9 unit of the SAPS and has appeared in court. Her case has been postponed for further investigation. She is in custody.
