Umag, Croatia – South Africa performed well at the ITF Seniors and Super-Seniors World Individual Championships played in Umag, Croatia over the past two weeks.

Both tournaments are the premier events on the ITF Seniors Circuit.

This year over 470 players from 37 countries competing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles across five age categories from 65-and-over to 85-and-over took part.

South Africa took home two Gold, a silver and five bronze medals.

Petro Kruger  together with British partner Frances MacLennan beat Jacqueline Boothman (Great Britain)/Ellie Krocke (Netherlands) 3-6 6-3 [10-5] in the Women’s Doubles 70 and over to win Gold. The second Gold for South Africa came from Derek Lawer in the Men’s Doubles 80 and over category. Lawer partnered Michael Van Berckel of the Netherlands to beat the German duo of Wilfried Mahler and Guenter Schwellnus 6-3 6-4 in that final.

The Silver came from Jackie Zylstra who lost in the finals of the Women’s 80 and over singles to Burnett Herrick of the USA 4-6 2-6.

South Africa’s five Bronze medals were won by Petro Kruger women’s 70 and over singles, doubles partners Peter Carter & Daan Spengler in the mens doubles 65 and over and Jackie Zylsta and Francois van der Merwe in the mixed doubles 80 and over.
