“ROAR, YOUNG LIONS ROAR!” tells a story of the young comrades from the dusty, windswept townships of the Cape Flats, who laid down their lives in the 1980s in the struggle for liberation. Some of these youth who survived are unable to live normal lives due to the trauma they experienced during detention and torture.
Told through personal narratives, an intimate portrait of some of the young lions who were prepared to sacrifice their lives for the struggle to end apartheid, is revealed. “Roar Young Lions Roar!” gives a voice to some of the forgotten men and women who have received little or no acknowledgement of their contribution to the struggle, many of whom feel that they have been cast aside.
In commemoration of Human Rights Day, this episode of Special Assignment reflects on these lingering questions in South Africa’s democracy, and raises pertinent issues about what democracy means to the country’s citizens against what many had hoped for.
