EASTERN CAPE – Ayanda Tutu (38), appeared in East London Magistrates’ Court today, 21 July 2021 and was remanded in custody. He was arrested yesterday, 20 July 2021 for allegations of police killing, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

It is alleged that on 18 June 2021 at about 18:30, two unknown gunmen entered the house of Sergeant Mphakameli Mazinywana (48) at Old Payne Location in Mthatha and fired several shots, fatally wounding. The suspects fled with his service pistol. Sergeant Mazinywana was attached to the Mthatha police station.

Yesterday morning, the Mthatha based Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in a joint operation with Gqeberha Tactical Response Team as well as Gqeberha Flying Squad arrested Tutu at his place of residence in Motherwell. He was found in possession of a firearm with 12 rounds of ammunition.

The case was remanded to 23 July 2021 for a formal bail application in the Mthatha Magistrates’ Court.
