EASTERN CAPE- The Serious Corruption Crime Investigation of Hawks became victorious again when Nyameka Qongqo (43) the former OR Tambo District Municipality Capital Expenditure Accountant got convicted yesterday, 17th of February 2021 in the Umtata High Court.
This emanates from a 2014 case when the accused was still an employee at OR Tambo District Municipality. She effected duplicate payments to the value of R9.8 million to her husband’s business account, Zingce Trading as well as her sister’s business account, Ogiyonke Construction.
The case was reported to the Hawks for investigation and upon conclusion of the investigation five(5) people including juristic persons were charged for fraud and money laundering. She was yesterday found guilty on both charges.
The case has been postponed to the 25th of March for sentencing. She is out on bail.
Meanwhile, Qongqo’s husband Thobani Alex Ntshokovu and his company was convicted early in 2020 and sentenced to 5(five) years wholly suspended and to further pay an amount of R50,000 as a fine.
The case is still continuing against the accused’s sister and her company and is also remanded for the 25th of March 2021.
The Serious Corruption Crime Investigation was applauded by the Eastern Cape Provincial Head of Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Mboiki Obed Ngwenya for a great job done.
