WESTERN CAPE – A 38-year-old Zimbabwean National has been sentenced to a fine of R10 000 wholly suspended for 5 years for the unlawful possession of elephant Ivory after he entered into a plea agreement with the State.

Cosmus Ziwande, appeared at Cape Town Magistrates court, yesterday 3rd February 2022 where he pleaded guilty to one charge under the Contravention of Section 42(1)(b). He was arrested on 14 May 2021 following information from Crime Intelligence that was operationalised by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in cape Town.

He was found in possession of a stash that included one raw elephant tusk and some processed elephant Ivory. Ziwande is currently serving a 7 year direct imprisonment sentence on a separate matter for tampering with essential infrastructure in Clanwilliam during July 2021.
