CDP reacts to crime stats
The Christian Democratic Party (CDP) expressed its concern with the increase in murders by 800 per annum in South Africa.
“We are especially concerned, as these figures appear to include the highest number of murders in the world for an identifiable group, namely farmers.
The general murder rate is 32,2 per 100 000 per annum, which is about half the rate for the murder of police, but much lower than the 100 per 100 000 per annum for farmers,” says CDP leader, Rev. Theunis Botha.
“The hike of almost 26 per cent for drug related crimes is especially disconcerting.
“The statistics for drunken driving raise many questions. The numbers for the Western Cape is above 220 per 100 000 per annum and for Gauteng above 200 per 100 000 per annum, yet only 41 per 100 000 per annum in Limpopo. The numbers, for Limpopo as those for the Free State, North West and Northern Cape simply do not add up.
“With the high levels of corruption in the country, the relatively sharp decrease in commercial crime does not appear to be reliable.”
“It is worth noting that where reliable figures show a decrease these decreases sadly, are insignificant.”
