EASTERN CAPE – A foreign national couple, Abdul Shakul (39) and Sarah Kazibe (37) were convicted by the East London Regional Court on 6 August 2021 for fraud.
Shakul and Kazibe introduced themselves as traditional healers to the victim in East London. The victim from Mdantsane was employed at the Department of Education as a clerk. After several consultations with the couple, the victim was influenced to resign from her workplace and withdraw her pension money claiming that they would multiply it to R10 000 000. She did as she was told and handed her R328 000 to the couple in November 2014. Immediately after the money was handed over, the couple disappeared.
The victim lodged a complaint with the East London Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks for probing which culminated in the arrest of the duo in Bloemfontein on 10 May 2017. The accused have been in custody throughout the trial.
