The leader of the AWB in the Vaal and his associates have been arrested after they were found in possession of an assortment of firearms and ammunition on Wednesday.
A joint operation involving the Vaalrand Organised Crime, the K9 and the Flying Squad led the officers to a house in Vandebijlpark where the 48-year-old AWB leader was found with two rifles, two shotguns, two pistols and 2136 of different calibre ammunition. The suspect claimed that he had bought the firearms from a certain house in Vereeniging.
On Thursday the same team proceeded to the said address and found 306 live rounds of a .22 rifle. Investigations continued to a plot in Laparadiso Estate in Vanderbijlpark where a 42-year-old man, a member of the AWB was arrested for being in possession of nine rifles and three pistols. The two will appear before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Monday for possession of unlicensed firearms.
In a separate incident, the members from the Hawks firearms unit, in conjunction with Ekrhuleni Metro police and National Intelligence members followed up on information about a house in Dawn Park in which there were firearms.
Upon arrival the officers found three firearms and 22 live rounds of ammunition, wrapped in a plastic and hidden inside a stove. They also found a maroon Audi A1 which was reported stolen in Pinetown. A search at another house in Phumula near Leondale, Alberton resulted in the discovery of a .38 revolver with 29 live ammunition and a handgun with 6 live rounds. Officers were in company of two suspects who are behind bars for car hijacking.
