KWAZULU-NATAL – Two accused, Sthembiso Chiya (29) and Michael Gumbi (26) briefly appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 01 February on a charge of copper theft.
This follows their arrest by Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation and Prasa Investigators on Sunday, 31 January 2021.
It is alleged that members received information about suspects who were cutting copper cables between Umkomaas and Scottburgh. A subsequent joint operation was conducted and the two accused were caught in the act cutting Prasa cables.
They were immediately placed under arrest for theft and additionally charged for damage to essential infrastructure. The team recovered 216 meters of overhead copper cable worth R20 000.00 and seized one bolt cutter, a motor vehicle as well as two cell phones.
The case against the duo was postponed to 8 February 2021, whilst they remain in custody.
