EASTERN CAPE – The members of the Hawks’ Organised Crime Unit in Port Elizabeth, together with the Motherwell Crime Intelligence officers have arrested a 31-year-old for being possession of abalone at Kinkelbos on Wednesday.
Hawks had received a tip-off about a vehicle which was transporting abalone along the N2 route. The vehicle was spotted and pulled over. Upon searching the officers found 6013 units of abalone valued at an estimated amount of R500 000. Investigations further revealed that the same vehicle was hijacked at Mount Road, Port Elizabeth on Friday, 20 January 2017.
The suspect will make his first court appearance at the Paterson Magistrate Court in Port Elizabeth on Monday, 13 February 2017. Investigations to determine the origin and the possible destination of the abalone are underway.
