KWAZULU-NATAL – The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team assisted by the Provincial Organised Crime detectives and Public Order Police arrested two suspects aged 26 and 40 for the alleged murder of a police officer. The suspects will appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 24 May 2021.
On 4 May 2021, two detectives from Phoenix SAPS were reported to be inside the police vehicle between the Ndwedwe Main Road and Cottonlands in Verulam when they were attacked by unknown gunmen who fired shots at their vehicle. Sergeant Mbanjwa was fatally wounded and another Sergeant sustained injuries.
A murder and attempted murder investigation by the team of Hawks in Durban led to the arrest of the suspects on 20 May 2021 in Tongaat. Police also recovered a firearm, a number of rounds of ammunition, five cellphones, three heavy-duty gloves and a dagger in their dwelling at Magwaveni in Tongaat.
The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if it was used in the murder of a police officer or other serious crimes.
