WHO announces Health for All Film Festival shortlist and jury composition
26 March, 2020 — In an extraordinary demonstration of creative energy and enthusiasm for telling public health stories, the first ever Health for All Film Festival organized by the World Health Organization, has attracted nearly 1300 short film submissions — both amateur and professional – from more than 110 countries. These have now been shortlisted to 15 titles in each of the three competition categories: video reports, animation films and films about nurses and midwives.
‘The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for compelling and creative communications about public health. Last year, WHO announced our first Health for All Film Festival. The volume, quality and diversity of entries has far surpassed our expectations ’ said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. ‘In these difficult times, films and other media are a powerful way, not only of communicating important health messages, but of administering one of the most powerful medicines: Hope.’
During the coming weeks, critically-acclaimed professional artists from the film and music industries will review the shortlisted films and recommend winners to WHO’s Director-General, who will make the final decision. The illustrious jury includes film writer and director Richard Curtis; former Director of Annecy International Animation Films Festival Patrick Eveno; composer Ricky Kej; singer and songwriter Angélique Kidjo; film documentary producer Barbara Miller, and actor and director Wagner Moura.
Four winners will be announced in May.
