Pretoria – Lawrence Tebogo Matheatau, a 28-year-old bogus doctor, will spend another seven days behind bars following the decision by the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court to remind him in custody after he was arrested for fraud on Monday.
Matheatau allegedly approached a medical doctor who owns a surgery in Jourberton Township, just outside Klerksdorp in North West province and requested to partner with him and share the same premises. The consensus was reached and an agreement contract was signed and sealed, with Matheatau agreeing to earn R25 000 per month.
On 9 December 2015 the fake doctor hit the ground running and started assisting patients and was dully remunerated as per agreement. But the surgery owner became suspicious when Matheatau started asking questions which a qualified doctor should provide answers even in his sleep.
The Hawks were then contacted and an investigation was launched. With the Health Council confirming that Matheatau was not registered with them as a practising medical practitioner, and his practice number deemed to be fake, the Hawks paid him a visit and found that it was business as usual.
Soon after the end of one of his consultation sessions, the fake doctor was arrested.
He will appear again in the same court on 10 February 2015.
