Pretoria – The Hawks have on Thursday morning arrested a Nigerian man shortly after he had handed a laptop with 2kg of cocaine hidden in the lining of the bag to an undercover cop in Johannesburg. A sting operation was conducted after information was received that the suspect had arranged for a mule to transport the laptop to a destination in Mauritius. The suspect’s bakkie was also seized during the arrest.
The 37-year-old suspect will appear before the Jeppe Magistrate’s Court on Friday, facing a charge of dealing in drugs. The Acting Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza applauded the members for disrupting the plan of the arrested drug dealer. He said had the drug arrived in Mauritius it might have caused more harm than good.
“One our mandate is to prevent crime from happening and in this success our members deserve a pat in the back for thoroughly investigating a tip-off from an informer and subsequently arresting the drug dealer. We will still continue to put more efforts on detecting drug related crimes and bring offenders to book”, said Ntlemeza.
