EASTERN CAPE – Afika Nwabisa Mabongo (37) was arrested by the Mthatha Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team on 13 April 2021 for eight counts of fraud.
It is alleged that between January 2012 and December 2012, Mabongo as the Director of MA-B Training Academy that operated as an institution of higher learning provided health related courses to students. On completion of the courses, the college would issue certificates to successful candidates.
It is reported that in response to whistleblowing and complaints by former students to the college who were deemed unemployable since their qualifications were not recognised as the institution was not registered, the Mthatha Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team pursued the investigations which culminated into the arrest of the director on 13 April 2021.
Mabongo is also said to have made a short appearance at Mthatha Magistrate court where she was released R1500 bail .
The case is remanded to the 26 April 2021.
