Two police officers were arrested yesterday in the North West Province on allegations of corruption.
The two policemen, one a warrant officer and the other a sergeant, had arrested a suspect for housebreaking and theft at Letlhabile in the North West Province.
The suspect was held at the Letlhabile police station in order to be brought to the Brits court today, 15 May 2019.
In the meantime the sergeant approached the housebreaking suspect yesterday and offered to “assist” him to be released on bail. The sergeant demanded R2500 stating that the R500 would be for the bail and the R2000 would cover the “facilitation” of the bail.
The Head Office Anti-Corruption Unit was contacted and a team was sent to the Brits Court where they arrested both the sergeant and warrant officer.
Charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice are being brought against both members. They are both in police custody and they are expected to appear at the Brits court tomorrow, 16 May 2019.
The arrest of the two members is a clear indication of police management’s commitment to root out corruption in the SAPS.
