KWAZULU-NATAL – A 36-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Vryheid Magistrate’s Court today after he was arrested during the weekend in connection with a business robbery at Fidelity company premises in Vryheid in 2017.
In September 2017, two security guards were held up at a gunpoint by a group of armed suspects. The suspects demanded keys for the volts and could not find them on site. They gained entry with the assistance of their accomplice Mbuyiseni Mthembu, a guard employed by Fidelity. They managed to get away with more than R12 million.
A case of business robbery was registered and allocated to the Hawks members from Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation team. The suspect was ultimately traced to his hideout in Gauteng resulting in his arrest on Saturday.
The Hawks’ investigation revealed that the suspects colluded with one of the security guards by the name of Mbuyiseni Mthembu who was arrested few days after the incident and was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the Madadeni High Court last year.
