Deadly Decisions
Alcohol impacts on people’s judgment and often inflates their confidence levels.
Making them feel immortal and invincible. Alcohol also increases aggression levels.
Road accidents caused by drunk drivers are not uncommon on our roads.
Too often the consequences are fatal, leaving families devastated by the loss of their loved ones, and making anything in the way a target.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), South Africa tops the list of drunk-driving related deaths throughout the world. Every year, about 18 000 people are killed and 150 000 injured in car accidents in South Africa. These people are loved and will be missed by their families. Their deaths will affect thousands more lives and will impact on South Africa’s economy. These drunk-driving victims are more than mere statistics.
60% of these accidents are caused by drunk drivers; this figure is predicted to rise to 80% by 2020. Many of the victims are under the age of 30. Pedestrians, cyclists, other motorcyclists and runners are especially at risk.
