KWAZULU-NATAL – On Tuesday, 22 December 2020 Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation team arrested a 49-year-old Warrant Officer from Phoenix police station’s Detective Services.
It is alleged that the he was investigating a case of malicious damage to property and assault which happened in the Phoenix area. The suspect who is now a complainant in this matter, allegedly received a call from the Warrant Officer on Monday to meet and discuss the case. The two allegedly met at Mount Edgecombe and the Warrant Officer allegedly requested a gratification of R10 000.00 in order to destroy the case docket.
The complainant allegedly paid him R5000.00 and the balance was to be paid the following day. The matter was then reported to the Hawks members and an undercover operation was swiftly conducted. When the complainant was paying the balance at Phoenix police station the team swooped in. Members searched the office and they found the cash.
He was then arrested and charged for corruption. He is expected to appear in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court today, 23 December 2020.
