A joint multi-disciplinary team, including the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, the SAPS, Gauteng Metro Police and other stakeholders managed to arrest five alleged cash-in-transit heist suspects.
The five were arrested in Johannesburg on Wednesday and subsequently appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court under heavy police guard on Friday for the alleged murder and cash in transit robbery in Thohoyandou last week Sunday.
A security guard had just collected cash from one of the shops in Thohoyandou when he was ambushed and shot before he could even get into the armoured vehicle. The suspects managed to get away with some of the cash following a shootout with the guards. The wounded guard was rushed to the hospital unfortunately he succumbed as a result of his injuries.
The team comprising of the Hawks, Pretoria K9 unit, Crime Intelligence, Limpopo cash in transit task team, SAPS Airwing, Tactical Response Team, Gauteng Provincial Operation Crime Combatting and Gauteng Metro Police managed to track and arrest the suspects in the Johannesburg area.
Three vehicles and some electronic equipment have been seized thus far pending further investigations.
Wesley Kekana (42), Lawrence Mudau (30), Sebotsa Khauoe (42), Elvin Chauke (34) and Mooketsi Rafube (43) were remanded in custody pending their next appearance in the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court on 09 March 2020.
