The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya lauded the East London’s South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) for their sterling investigative expertise that led to the successful conviction and sentence of Chigbuogu Nwakoye (47) on the 21 June 2021.
Nwakoye was ultimately sentenced to a fine of R30 000, or four years imprisonment by the East London Magistrate Court after a series of court appearances. In addition, he was handed a further four (4) years imprisonment, suspended for 5 (five) years on condition that the he is not again convicted of possession or dealing in drugs during the period of suspension
This conviction and sentence was preceded by his arrest on 24 May 2019, after the Hawks team received information about a suspect in possession of drugs. A swift reaction by the team that conducted a search at his premises found him in possession of 4 grams of cocaine at his place of residence. Nwakoye was arrested and was later released on R1000 bail.
