POLOKWANE- Chokes Willy Soafa (43) was convicted and sentenced for robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday,30 January 2020.
On 06 October 2007, Soafa and his two accomplices robbed a G4S security guard of over R100 000-00 at gunpoint in one of the restaurants in Polokwane and fled on foot.
A group of taxi drivers who witnessed the robbery gave a chase and managed to catch Soafa and also recovered two firearms. The police were called and the accused was handed over together with the recovered firearms.
Police investigation led to the apprehension of the second accused and recovery of the money that was robbed the very same day. The second accused has since been sentenced in 2012 following his bargain plea.
Soafa was out on bail until he was found guilty by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court and sentenced as follows:
· Robbery with aggravating circumstances- eight (8) years imprisonment
· Two count of possession of unlicensed firearms- eight (8) years imprisonment on each count.
· Unlawful possession of ammunition- five (5) years imprisonment
· The sentences are to run concurrently.
