During this past weekend the team set up to deal with crimes in and around the OR Tambo International Airport arrested another suspect, bringing the total number of suspects facing prosecution with regards to people allegedly being followed from the airport and robbed to five (5).
On 13 October 2017 the team initially arrested seven suspects of which three were questioned and released and four were charged and remanded in custody. The four suspects have been identified as Mandla Dlamini, 23 years; Nqobile Moyo, 35 years; Frank Mudau, 35 years old and Martin Sibanda, 37 years old. These suspects reappeared in the Wynberg (Alexandra) Regional Court yesterday for a formal bail application. They have all been remanded in custody again until 1 November 2017 awaiting legal representation.
In the meantime, the fifth suspect, John Kabelane, 32 years old appeared in the Wynberg (Alexandra) magistrate’s court yesterday and has also been remanded in custody until 30 October 2017 when he will be expected to reappear for a formal bail application.
Some of the charges the suspects are facing include armed robbery and possession of property suspected to be stolen.
The arrest of these suspects is considered to be extremely significant to the efforts of the joint law enforcement effort to decisively deal with the scourge of aggravated robberies, not only in relation to ORTIA only, but nationally as well.
The arrest and continuing prosecution of these five suspects should also serve as a reminder to potential criminals that, with the measures that are being implemented currently, it is only a matter of time before they are detected and brought to book.
