KWAZULU-NATAL – Phumowakhe Ndwandwe (21) briefly appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrates’ Court yesterday for murder of Detective Sergeant Sakhile Nsibande who was fatally shot last week.
On Thursday 14 November 2019, KwaMbonambi SAPS detectives conducted a raid at Cinci reserve looking for a house robbery suspect. A suspect’s house was identified and tactically approached by the police. When the suspect noticed that he was cornered, he allegedly fired shots through the window and escaped. It was then discovered that Sergeant Nsibande was shot and he was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
A case of murder was reported and the case docket was allocated to Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime unit for further investigation. On 15 November 2019, a joint operation conducted by Empangeni Public Order Police, Crime Intelligence, KwaMbonambi detectives and Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime unit yielded positive results when Ndwandwe was arrested at Kwamsane area near Mtubatuba. He was found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The firearm will be sent for ballistic test to ascertain if it was used in the commission of any crime including the shooting of Sergeant Nsibande. Ndwandwe was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 26 November 2019.
