Special Assignment continues its analysis of apartheid assassin and Vlakplaas commander Eugene de Kock’s release on parole after 20 years behind bars.
We speak to the Minister of Justice about why some of the victims’ families were not consulted prior to de Kock’s release. We find out if the Justice Department intends to prosecute perpetrators of apartheid era crimes who applied for and were denied amnesty at the TRC.
During de Kock’s criminal trial, 1994-1996, and his testimony at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, 1998, he and his Vlakplaas colleagues confessed to planning and executing several murders under orders from their superiors. Of the 7,116 people who applied for amnesty, 5143 were denied yet none of these people have been tried.
Watch part 2 of “De Kock – A Country Divided” produced by Richelle-Seton Rogers on Special Assignment, aired Sundays on SABC 3 at 20:30PM. Repeated Mondays at 23:30PM.
