The Inkatha Freedom Party is reeling from shock after yet another of its leaders was gunned down at Inanda near KwaMashu in Durban this afternoon.
“We are shocked that the killing of our leaders in that area has not stopped. Mr Zwelithini “Fuhluza” Khumalo was gunned down in cold blood this afternoon as he arrived at his home in Inanda. He was a staunch member of the IFP who displayed exceptional leadership qualities. It is ironic that Mr Khumalo, being the Chairman of the local policing forum and who was committed to bringing peace and stability to his community should die in such a violent manner. This community has been plagued with violence and killings for far too long now and it cannot go on. We are often assured that the police are doing their best to stop the killings but innocent people live in fear everyday of their lives. We are reminded that less than a month ago the IFP Ward 39 Chairperson at KwaMashu, Mr Mbhasobheni Biyela was gunned down and we have not heard of any progress in the investigation of that killing”, said IFP National Chairman, Mr Blessed Gwala MPL
“While we call on our law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice, we question why the police are unable to get to the bottom of these killings. In view of
the number of killings in this area, we question why is it that no reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killers of IFP leaders but when ANC people are killed we see
rewards being offered without delay. We do not see this as random criminality. There must be much more to these killings. We call on the police to use its crime intelligence unit to unearth the motives for
the killing of law-abiding citizens. We condemn these senseless killings in the strongest possible terms and demand that it must stop immediately. We appeal to our members to remain calm and co-operate with the law enforcement authorities. The IFP sends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr Khumalo”, concluded Mr Gwala.
