Monday, 09 November 2015, Johannesburg, South Africa. – Wheelchair Tennis South Africa scored first place at Letsema Awards for sporting projects for disabled athletes at the prestigious event hosted by Murray & Roberts, in partnership with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). The 34th annual Jack Cheetham Memorial and Letsema Awards was staged at Sandton Convention Centre last week Thursday.
The Murray & Roberts Letsema Award was initiated in 2009 following the outstanding performance of athlete Hilton Langenhoven who captured the attention of the world at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. The award recognizes sports development projects for people with disabilities.
Wheelchair Tennis South Africa received R500 000 payable over five years and will be used towards providing opportunities to up and coming players to compete in events abroad.
Runner up in the Letsema category went to Fulton School for the Deaf and third place was awarded to the National Association for Blind Bowlers, Ekurhuleni Region.
“This has been another great year with truly wonderful achievements from our players,” commented WTSA General Manager Karen Losch. “Our players have again displayed true world-class performances during the year and I salute all of them for a year of great performances. It is through the players’ hard work, our staff dedication and volunteers’ commitment that the federation has grown to this point”, added Losch.
