Pretoria- A prosecutor at the Kimberly Magistrate’s Court found himself at the wrong side of the bench when he appeared at the same court on Tuesday for corruption.
Anele Kohlani (32) was arrested on Tuesday soon after receiving R1 500 bribe money from an accused who wanted his case to be withdrawn.
It is alleged that the accused was driving along the road with a group of people walking on the side when he accidentally bumped one of them with the mirror of his vehicle. The group started assaulting the driver which led to the opening of counter cases.
The accused and another person opened cases against each other and after reaching an agreement that they would withdraw the cases against each other, the accused asked the prosecutor to start with his case since it was going to be withdrawn.
Kohlani then threatened the accused and told him that his case had a potential of putting him (the accused) behind bars for 15-25 years, before demanding R1 500 to get rid of the case. After agreeing to the deal the case was postponed from 15 April 2015 to April 28 so that the accused could raise the funds.
The accused then brought the matter to the attention of the Hawks and a trap was set. On Tuesday Kohlani allegedly called the accused who was seated inside court and took him to his office where the money was paid and Kohlani was arrested subsequently arrested in possession of the bribe money.
Kohlani was released on bail and he will be back in the same magistrate’s court on May 22.
