EAST LONDON – A 67-year-old East London doctor and her 37-year-old assistant appeared before the East London Magistrate’s court on 17 May 2018 for Fraud and Corruption, after they were arrested on the same day by the Hawks following a Crime Intelligence focused investigation.
Dr Siphokazi Sokupa and Cwaita Mngqibisa stand accused of allegedly issuing fraudulent sick certificates to members of the public. The probe commenced earlier this month after authorities were alerted to the pair’s alleged shenanigans.
An undercover operation was conducted on the 10th and 15th of May and on both occasions Dr Sokupa allegedly issued sick certificates to an undercover agent with dates of his choice (post-dated and backdated) without subjecting him to any medical examination.
The pair has been released on a warning and they are expected to appear before the same court on 19 June 2018 pending further investigation.
