Two former police reservists have been sentenced to 12 month imprisonment or R6 000 fine after they were found guilty of fraud by the Machadodorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. The two presented fraudulent Grade 12 certificates when seeking permanent appointment within the South African Police Service.
Lettie Ntuli (34) and Philemon Sekwane (31) were active police reservists at the Machado police station in Mpumalanga in 2009 when reservists were incorporated into permanent SAPS employees provided they were in possession of matric certificate.
Ntuli and Sekwane approached Bongani Sydney Madonsela who printed fraudulent matric certificate for them. During the screening and selection process it was then discovered that the two were using fake certificates and were subsequently arrested.
The two pleaded guilty of the offence but the first accused, Madonsela, pleaded not guilty and his case was postponed to 5 October 2016 for trial.
