FREE STATE – A former Warrant Officer from Crime Intelligence, Teboho Japhta Mohapi (41), was convicted earlier in March this year by the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court for four counts of fraud.
Mohapi was arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Crime Investigation unit in 2016, following a probe into allegations that he short-changed a police informant of a compensation that was due to him. This was after the informant had given Mohapi credible crime related information.
Hawks’ investigations revealed that Mohapi received a substantial amount of R38 000, meant to reward the Informant but he deceitfully declared only R9000 and further told the informant that R5500 from the said amount was meant for another source who had supplied the same information. Mohapi was subsequently dismissed from the police following an internal disciplinary procedure.
The court has on the 26th of March 2019, sentenced Mohapi to six (6) years imprisonment of which two (2) years is wholly suspended on condition that the accused is not convicted of fraud during the period of suspension – this translates to four a (4) year effective prison term for the former officer who made a series of court appearances before he was ultimately sentenced.
