Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula has noted that the NPA today preferred charges against former Acting National Police Commissioner Phahlane and Brigadier Phahlane on allegations of corruption and fraud allegedly committed at the time when General Phahlane was Divisional Commissioner of SAPS
Forensic Services.
General Phahlane and Brigadier Phahlane are charged together with other private sector alleged accomplices.
“It is of public record that as Minister, I moved to recommend that General Phahlane steps aside from his duties in the police after the allegations against him were put to me by our IPID. The intention was to provide the IPID with the space to do its work without any interference and also to provide General Phahlane the necessary space to defend himself should he so wish,” says Mbalula.
“At this point we now are obligated to allow the court process to go ahead without any hindrance and for justice to be done and be seen to be done – as a Ministry, we shall not be offering commentary that could be seen prejudicial in the matter as it continues in court,” added Mbalula.
“SAPS is obligated to also offer all assistance to IPID and assist IPID in the conduct of its lawful constitutional mandate – I wish to encourage management to continue doing so whilst observing necessary employment policies of all our members and their rights,” concluded Mbalula.
