EASTERN CAPE- Deon Manuel Gaca (27) was convicted and sentenced in East London Regional Court on 25 May 2021 for charges of armed robbery.
It is reported that in September 2015 a British American Tobacco driver was delivering in East London when he was approached by four suspects who then robbed him of boxes of tobacco amounting to R272 000.
The suspects were later arrested and went through the trial process until they were convicted and sentenced except for Gaca who absconded. Gaca’s whereabouts were traced until he got rearrested in Cape Town and was brought back to the Eastern Cape to face his trial.
Gaca has been remanded in custody for the five year duration of his trial as he was deemed a flight risk after his abscondment. He was on 25 May 2021 convicted and given a six(6) year direct imprisonment sentence as well as declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The Provincial Head Major General Obed Ngwenya lauded the East London Serious Organised Crime Investigation team for ensuring that all the culprits are subjected to the hand of the law.
