KWAZULU-NATAL – Four suspects who were being sought for an armed robbery and murder are behind bars following an operation by the Hawks in Newcastle assisted by the local K9 Unit.
The three allegedly committed a series of armed robberies targeting service stations at Annieville Crossing in Dannhauser near Newcastle in December last year. During their alleged robbery spree, they fatally shot a security guard who was collecting cash and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
On Friday last week, the trio was arrested at Msinga during the operation. Khanyisani Langa (53) who was out on parole was found in possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. An AK47 with live rounds were also seized and both firearms have been sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in commission of crime.
The suspects, Khanyisani Langa, Sthembiso Mbatha (39) and Phumlani Zungu (29) appeared in the Dannhauser Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 January 2018 facing charges of murder, armed robbery, and possession of unlicensed firearm. They were remanded in custody and their case was postponed to 22 January 2018.
Further investigations revealed that another suspect, Menzi Sokhela (48) was linked to the incident and arrested. He will appear at the Msinga Magistrates court on Wednesday, 17 January 2018 for formal bail application. Investigations continues.
