KWAZULU-NATAL – On Monday 16 May 2022, the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Beniam Asefa (36) to nine years imprisonment or to pay a fine of R30 000 for contravening the Counterfeit Goods Act.

Asefa was selling counterfeit goods from his business premises. Samples of various brands were purchased and analysed. During the investigation by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Durban, it was established that the goods were counterfeit.

He was arrested on 14 December 2021 and appeared in court several times until he was sentenced on Monday.
