20 years imprisonment for attempted murder and hijacking
KIMBERLEY: 29 July 2021 – On 28 July 2021, Kimberley Magistrates’ Court sentenced Chris Potgieter aged 43 years to 20 years direct imprisonment for hijacking and attempted murder.
It was on March 2020 when a male person was hijacked and shot at the Boshoff road in Kimberley. Provincial Organised Crime Unit immediately commenced with the investigation which led them to Wolmaransstad where the suspect was hiding. The firearm used to commit crime was recovered together with 15 9mm live rounds, three shot gun rounds, two knives and clothes with blood stains. The hijacked vehicle was also found abandoned by Wolmaransstad police.
Potgieter was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years direct imprisonment for attempted murder and hijacking.
The Acting Provincial Head for Organised Crime, Colonel Clayton Du Plooy welcomed the sentence and commended the investigating, Sergeant Stefaans Mangate for the diligent work that ensured justice is served. “No stone will be left unturned in ensuring that all crimes threatening the safety and security of communities and their properties is investigated and that offenders are brought to justice as mandated by the Constitution of our country”, said Du Plooy.
