Pretoria: 27 February 2018 – The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Khehla John Sitole, has learnt with shock and deep sadness of the passing of three policemen as tragedy befell the area of Engcobo again in less than a week.
This morning shortly after midnight four members from North West Province were on investigation duty and as they were traveling from Umtata in the direction of Engcobo, a few kilometers outside Engcobo the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a horse and veered off the road.
Three members, including two constables and a sergeant were killed instantly and a fourth member was removed to hospital reportedly in a critical condition. General Sitole has conveyed his deepest sympathies to the loved ones and close colleagues of the fallen members and wished the injured member a speedy recovery.
“This is indeed a sad period for us all in the South African Police Service, as we prepare to mourn the untimely death of five of colleagues less than a week ago, tragedy as struck again in the same area,” said General Sitole.
