KWAZULU-NATAL – A 49-year-old former Public Prosecutor Advocate Matthews Ngwenya was arrested on Tuesday by the Hawks’ Durban Serious Corruption Investigation unit for corruption.
It is alleged that on 17 December 2015 Advocate Ngwenya who was based at the Madadeni Court approached a suspect in a rape case – who is a complainant in this case – and promised to drop charges against him in exchange for a R10 000 bribe. Ngwenya subsequently resigned when allegations of the alleged corruption surfaced against him.
Despite Advocate Ngwenya having allegedly received the said bribe, the trial continued and the complainant was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment. The convict then informed the court that he paid R10 000 to Advocate Ngwenya who had promised to drop the rape charges against him.
A case of corruption was reported and transferred to the Hawks for investigation, which resulted in his arrest. He has been granted R3000 bail after he appeared at the Durban Specialised Commercial Court on Tuesday, the case was postponed to the 23rd of July 2019 pending further investigation.
