The Provincial Government gazette has published the draft regulation pertaining to motor vehicle licence (MVL) fee increases in the province. The draft regulation is now open for public comment for a period of 30 days. While not required by law, we have continued to publish these draft regulations for comment so as to allow the over 1.7 million vehicle owners in the Western Cape the opportunity to submit their comments. This year, the proposed fee increases amount to an average 6% increase for the Western…

IFP: Road Safety Momentum Must Continue After Festive Season

The IFP has challenged the KZN MEC of Transport, Willies Mchunu to ensure that the high momentum to keep our roads safe during festive season becomes a 365-day practice if he is indeed serious about road safety and saving lives. “If there is an estimated 20 000 law enforcement officials that have been deployed across the province what can convince the MEC to lower the number of these officials after the festive season. It is not as though road accidents only happen during festive seasons.…

ILLEGAL STRIKE ACTION BY TAXI DRIVERS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE

I had agreed to meet with representatives of SANTACO to address some key issues outlined in a memorandum that I had received following the meeting request. The meeting took place on Friday 12 August 2014. Yesterday morning, taxi drivers embarked on their own violent and illegal strike action which resulted in a taxi driver being shot. This action went against SANTACO’s appeal to its members to inform drivers to refrain from participating in an illegal strike. SANTACO has since distanced itself from the illegal strike…

This is in attempt to recover close to R80 billion in assets and interest. The ports and rail operator is accused of stripping its Pension Fund and Transnet Second Defined Benefit Fund of its assets and mismanaging…

MINISTER GRANT CONDEMNS ACTS OF VANDALISM ON METRORAIL INFRASTRUCTURE

In the early hours of this morning, I received distressing news of vicious acts of vandalism carried out by criminals on Metrorail infrastructure. These vandals reportedly butchered signal cables at the busy section between Philippi and Nyanga, adversely affecting the train service between Nyanga and Khayelitsha/Chris Hani and Kapteinsklip/Mitchells Plain (statement from Metrorail attached). The Western Cape Government condemns such acts of vandalism in the strongest terms. The perpetrators of these very serious crimes must be made to face the full might of the law.…

“In reaksie daarop moet ‘n mens…
