A 24-year-old restaurant cashier has been arrested by the Hawks on Thursday afternoon in Hopefield, for allegedly compromising customers bank cards data, using an illegal point of sale device.

The arrest follow several complaints in the past two months from victims who suffered substantial financial losses after visiting the same restaurant, the resultant probe by the Commercial wing of the Hawks, resulted in the arrest of a Zimbabwean National, believed to be responsible for the alleged illicit operation.

One unauthorised point of sale device was found in the suspect’s possession as well as two bank cards with questionable authenticity.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Hopefield Magistrate’s Court on Friday the 7th, to answer to allegations in contravention of the Electronic Communication Act.
